a painting in 31 marks

I'm super excited to announce the launch of our next 5x7 book: A painting in 31 marks, by hometown heroes, Sonnenzimmer. Here's how they described their process:

With abstract painting, decisions that lead to a completed work can seem arbitrary or, worst of all, nonconsequential. With this project, we've attempted to open up the decision making process, shedding light on both our collaborative approach and the individual choices that lead to the completion of a painting. Two people, two colors, one painting. A painting in 31 marks.

The book is now available for purchase at 5x7books.com.

Note Well

Note Well is a new book by Debbie Carlos for 5x7.

Debbie's photos attempt to capture objects at their moments of greatest clarity: In certain light, at a certain time of day, in a certain place. The method is to wander and notice. Moments of quiet strangeness, patterns of light and shadow, minute-by-minute surprises, changes that don’t happen, something askew, something exactly in place, natural and artificial phenomena, are all sources of inspiration, and the subjects for her work.

You can buy a copy here.

Forty Five

If you were a fan of the record print well, brace yourself for the 45 edition!

If you haven't seen my record print, I basically sat down and drew a spiral for 6 hours to replicate the path a needle takes across a record's surface.

The 45 print is now available at the 5x7 shop!

Homework

Well, well, have we got a treat for you. For our next Family Room show we will be featuring the work of 5 dashing southern lads also known as Public School. And an added bonus, they're all road-tripping to chicago for the show! Well, except for Will, he's taking a fancy plane from Portland. This might be the funnest Post Family party ever!

PUBLIC SCHOOL is an Austin-based collective focused on design, illustration and photography. For a group based around creative collaboration, Homework is an opportunity to show the work created individually, after-hours, and with no client direction. Spanning a variety of mediums and covering subjects including cowboys, hot dogs, old motels, 30s stuff, and trade gothic, Homework features much of the self-initiated work produced by the studio this year.

Join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 9, 2011.

This event is sponsored by the rad cats at Uncommon. We will be selling limited run, Public School designed, iPhone 4 cases!

Levels and Degrees of Light

What began as a basic exploration in typography slowly transformed into a process of reduction and improvisation.

We started by type setting some of our favorite jazz album titles. Then we broke down the letterforms into shapes. We took the shapes and began composing them across spreads. The result is a musically-inspired narrative. One that ebbs and flows from page to page. The subtle tints, lines and textures weave together a story that only the reader may interpret.

Harriet

Today, Okay Type launches it's new typeface, Harriet. It's beautiful. Go buy the font!

Jackson describes it like this:

The Harriet Series is a rational serif family. It’s a contemporary reflection of the serifs popular in mid-20th-century American and English design. Harriet draws inspiration from both transitional faces, such as Baskerville, and modern faces, such as Century, at the same time it is unburdened by any particular historical model. The display styles give it just enough exuberance to sparkle while the diligent, sturdy text styles make it a true workhorse.
