Busted Amp will highlight the personal work that Chicago screen printing artists produce when they’re not making rock posters. The line up includes Sonnenzimmer, Delicious Design League, Jay Ryan, Dan Grzeca, Matt Daly and more. Opening night is this Thursday (June 26th) and will kick off with a panel discussion at 6:30pm. Last summer I had the journey of a lifetime while attending Type Camp on the beautiful Galiano Island. I shared the experience with 20 amazing, type-obsessed campers while being lead by some of the greatest type gurus around; Marian Bantjes, Shelley Gruendler and Ross Mills. I highly recommend Type Camp to any designer/typographer at any experience level, young or old. Looks like there are still a few spots open so get your application in now!

Camp started this week over at the Firebelly Headquarters. Keep up with their progress on the Camp FB blog which includes posts from campers and counselors alike, photos, and video.

Nico is a fashion and interview magazine out of Europe. Inside you will find a beautiful tight grid layout, uncoated paper stock and ligatures for days. Very sexy overall presentation. My only compliant so far is that it looks like they used a text weight typeface for their headlines! Aaaa… the little things.

Los Angeles’s famed Belmont tunnel (and more here) is filled with work by graffiti artists from around the world. Check out the galleries here and here

A close-up of a paint chip retrieved from the ruins of Belmont Art Park. The fragment is about 1cm thick, and consists of about 150-200 layers of paint.

A shocking reality check this weekend. Chicago street artist and designer Brendon Scanlon (aka SOLVE) was killed last Sunday night (June 14th). I have been following SOLVE on the streets around the city for years and never had the privilege of meeting him. Our hearts and thoughts go out to his friends and family. Much love and respect to you, Brendon… say hello to Tyler for us. He was a fan.

I had some friends in town this weekend and we all really wanted to go to a show. On a whim I decided we would go down the street to The Hideout. I have never been happier with a spontaneous concert outing. Joel Paterson brings the sounds of old time western swing to your ears, feet, hips and fingers.

I don’t know too much about Sexmachinery (the magazine or otherwise) but it looks really nice. The website is a little quirky but I got over it.

Oh what great fun! Make sure to check out the rest of Kristen Lepore’s work, especially ‘Craig and Walter’ as one of them discusses whether or not to become a vegan. If you’re in her film section, it’s the one with a narwhal and a giant squid sitting in a booth at a diner.

Seriously, come on.

I came across this ad last night and thought I should share it. The ‘word’ on the figurative ‘street,’ says it’s a real ad which ran in Europe years ago. If it is a real ad, it is a definite BOOO for McDonald’s. However, if it is, in fact, a critique by some clever artist, then it for sure deserves a YAY! Either way, don’t eat McDonald’s it is terrible, for everyone.

Okay… so it’s not exactly a service. Either way it is really cool. Jan Vormann walked around the quiet town of Bocchignano, Italy filling its decrepit walls with lego pieces.

Robert Mars’ work is fairly confusing. Is it collage and screen printing? or painting? I have no idea. It looks cool either way!

Scott Wade can’t resist a dirty windshield, but instead of the usual “wash me” tag, Scott exercises a little more creativity to create this series of amusing works. You can see more dirty car art here and here.

I’m not usually big on fashion photography, but Kattaca’s series of Gustav Klimt inspired photos is quite stunning. Made up by Carol Gamarra and Mario Ville, the Kattaca team’s dramatic work is worth checking out.

Next weekend (June 28th and 29th) don’t miss the Handmade Market. it looks kinda girly… but we can dig it.

Wax is a store/site management system developed by paperscissors&glue that is geared towards record labels and musicians. It is also duly suited for many other situations, including but not limited to, stores for clothing, artwork, and toys. It gives folks the ability to easily control content on their site without needing to code HTML or know any programming languages, or having to do extensive image sizing.

Here are some examples of sites that use it.

We are sad, so go in our stead and be better for it.

Here is some ridiculous energy (A day late, I know… sorry). Hifana’s insane mix of turntablism, sample techniques and analog instruments is a force to be reckoned with.

So right now Rod, Sam, Chad and Davey Post are driving a giant, bright red Suburban to Brooklyn. They left late last night after a long day of preparations including the finishing touches to our five million pound gallery walls and packaging some beautiful, never-before-seen artworks. The rest of us are flying tonight because we are afraid of the smells from the car ride. The Post Family eats lots of junk food and thus becomes gassy. I just about cleared the room last night. Anyways… Come see us tomorrow at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn at the bottom of McCarren Park Pool. I will be wearing floaties, goggles, nose pincher things, Zinka, ear plugs and an elegant, form-fitting, european-style speedo.

Very cool work by Brooklyn schooled, Cali livin artist Evah Fan. Pictured above is Fan’s 3D zine. Damn… why didn’t I think of that.

The remix was created by graphic design student James Houston and features a Sinclair ZX Spectrum on guitar, a Epson LX-81 Dot Matrix Printer on drums, a HP Scanjet 3c on bass guitar and an array of hard drives doing the vocals & FX.

For example, the security at the event all had tee shirts with MXML printed on them. Great work mister Wilson… we salute you.

Book includes interviews with Futura, David Ellis, Barry McGee and more.

You Work For Them says that BLK/MRKT Gallery is or was Shepard Fairy’s Gallery… I assure you it is not nor ever was.

Erin McSavaney is a Vancouver based artist whose latest work focuses on aging mid 20th century industrial buildings with a delicate “balance between detail and impression.”

Welcome to the first installment of Tuesday Type. Each week I will be drooling over type related matter that is, well, for lack of a better or real word, droolable. I’m starting off this series with a typeface that I believe is one of the best sans-serifs to bless the type market in years, Seravek. Designed by Eric Olson of Process Type Foundry, “Seravek is a linear sans-serif designed for identity, editorial and information design.” It’s also beautiful. I am basically in love (strictly platonic) with the bold lowercase.

This weekend I had the pleasure of seeing, in my opinion, one of the best acts in music today – Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band. Featuring members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor as well as 4 other members from various other explorations in sound, their neo-classical crescendo-core sound is a force to be reckoned with.

I just took a few minutes to post some recent pictures from the studio. Look’s like we’ll be back in full swing again starting immediately. Take a peak at a recent day at the studio and stay posted for some big family upgrades!

With the Rumba Series you can “design your own personal drum table with interchangeable and rearrangeable percussion inserts.” You know, for the indoor hippies.

“The organ’s innards had been replaced with relays and wires and light blue air hoses. And when the key was pressed, a 110-volt motor strapped to a girder high up in the room’s ceiling began to vibrate, essentially playing the girder and producing a deafening low hum — like one of the tuba tones played by the mother ship in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.””

A few more of my top picks from the DMY International Design Festival: Furniture with memory, PLOPP, Schiebekönig and Kantik

Instead of restoring the table Agnieszka Lasota preserves them in their current state returning functionality.

PLOPP, from Oskar Zieta, is made out of thin metal sheets welded together to resemble inflatable furniture.

Schiebekönig, from genauso.und.anders, is a container system with interchangeable seasonal colors.

Kantik, from PYG Design, is a single piece bookshelf that simply leans against a wall.

Really strange photography by Phil Toledano. And for those of you that don’t know… strange is a compliment.

Benjamin Verdonck created this nest, with structural and fire safety measure, of course, using 23 silver birches, one birch, one willow, 2 straw bales, 1 bucket of spit, 3 bags of sand, 12 buckets of glue and 19 cans of polyurethane foam, according to the list on his nest website. The nest is located in the Weena Tower in Roterdam (Netherlands).

Liliana Porter incorporates little tiny figurines into her work. She also does wonderful digital embroideries, amongst other mediums.

“Tomory Dodge’s paintings describe places on the edge of society, clandestine sites where revelers might go to partake in the illicit or where youth might go to explore and possibly uncover the remains of a hiker that lost his way. While much of the imagery in his work is in fact drawn from things observed during excursions into the California desert much is left to fantasy.”

Skate Study is a concept house based on a passion for mid-century design and skateboard culture. In my opinion the idea of using skateboard decks as furniture is a little overdone but most of the concepts at Skate Study are really nice.

After a three-year hiatus, EM magazine is back! Issue No. 22, themed ‘Neighborhood Folk’, will delve into the idea of localization vs. globalization. Along with the bi-monthly print version, EM will have daily content on their website discussing topics ranging from art, design, fashion, music, literature, to politics.

The mechanical mirrors created by Daniel Rozin are made from unreflective surfaces, such as ‘the Wooden Mirror’ pictured above, which is made out of 830 squares of wood, 830 motors, some electronics, a computer, and a video camera. The video camera sends the image to the computer which transfers the information to each motor. Then each motor aligns the wooden pixels to reflect a certain intensity of light. How? I’m not really sure, and if I were Daniel I would respond to such questions like this.
